artificial reef
At a distance everything is green, brown and grey. Get closer and the landscape changes colour!

The Schelde Delta lies in the Netherland’s south west corner, in the province of Zeeland. Zeeland’s hundreds of kilometres of dykes, and semi-open and closed dams protect the Dutch from the sea. Together, these form the Delta Works – the largest underwater artificial reef in the world.
lighting
The conditions in Zeeland are challenging for lighting. While you will need direct strong light to create contrast, the silt in the water means a greater risk of dirt and spots in the photos. Each photo requires careful consideration, and the question arises whether the common practice of using two flashes is always the best option in Zeeland.

Are you ready to rethink your approach to underwater photography? Then we would love to see you in Zeeland in 2015!
close focus
Most photography in Zeeland is macro and close focus wide angle. The bottom dwellers are small and the distance to the subject is short. You will do best with a 60 mm or 105 mm macro lens, teleconverters and screw on close-up lens attachments. Even a 150 macro is too long as the water column fades the contrast. You would also use the lens with the shortest focal length for landscapes and still life photography. Photos taken in Zeeland feature image filling subjects. Given that the visibility of these waters ranges from three to ten meters, you will lose your subject if you try to take a landscape photo of the subject in its background.

underwater life
All diving in Zeeland is done on man-made hard substrates at the base of dykes, the supports of the Zeeland Bridge, and even around hanging mussel farms. Underwater, the dyke is covered in a carpet of white, red, pink, purple, yellow and orange anemones, sponges and ascidians. There are all sorts of fish - such as gobies, shannies, cottids, rock gunnels and flat fish – as well as lobsters, squat lobsters, starfish, sea slugs and prawns. In May, the cuttlefish come to the Oosterschelde to breed. You can watch the mating ritual up close and personal.
