Competition Zone Levensstrijd (34) - Oosterschelde

If you would like a shallow, spectacular dive, go to Levensstrijd. It involves quite a long walk to the site, but even then you will not dive beyond 10 metres. From Zierikzee's harbour entrance, a narrow channel runs northwards between the mainland and the ‘Nunnenplaatje’. The deepest place is near the harbour entrance. Why go to all this trouble? It is usually quieter here than at the popular dive sites such as the Zeeland Bridge or Zoetersbout and, given that it lies in the lee of the current, is an excellent place for new divers to the Oosterschelde.

The dikes at this dive site were reinforced in 2013. This means that there is only one entry into the water and that is the dive ladder. Shore entries and exits can be done at high tide.

There is plenty of benthic life at this shallow site including various species of flat fish, sepiola and North Sea crab. Cuttlefish can be found here too once the water temperature reaches 12 degrees Celsius.

The competition zone runs from dike marker #175 north of the ladder to dike marker #179 south of the ladder. Dives here during the competition will be shore dives.

  • Ample parking
  • Dike crossing place
  • Safe entry into the water

This site can be dived at both high and low tide. The easiest time to enter and exit the water is at high tide. This is the site to see the most underwater life at the shallowest depths. There is little to see at depths beyond 5 metres.

Depth: 6 metres by high tide

Recommended maximum depth: 10 metres
